5. Mass Effect Trilogy
While the overall ending has received quite a bit of backlash, the Mass Effect trilogy is still widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi RPG franchises of the past decade, if not all-time. This is partly due to the fact that the games have enough detailed lore to almost rival that of Star Trek!
Similar to other games like Heavy Rain, the Mass Effect trilogy gives you the power to make a good number of key moral decisions, with consequences flowing over into each riveting installment. However, being an RPG, the games do showcase various elements not seen in Heavy Rain, such as a melee and long-range combat system and character level-ups. Mass Effect is also rich in philosophical considerations (e.g. the nature of ‘consciousness’, etc.) that go beyond the cut-and-dry narratives of most other sci-fi titles.
6. Beyond: Two Souls
Developed by the same people behind Heavy Rain, it’s no surprise that Beyond: Two Souls lands itself on this list. Released back in October 2013, the game was highly anticipated, owed to Quantic Dream’s previous success with Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain. Thankfully, Beyond: Two Souls was able to meet most (but not all) of the high expectations placed on it.
You play as Jodie Holmes, guiding her through her life experiences with an attached poltergeist known as Aiden and the many struggles she faces because of him. The gameplay is very reminiscent of Heavy Rain, albeit with the addition of supernatural abilities that you’ll be able to occasionally use courtesy of Aiden. Choice-and-consequence is a little more arbitrary here compared to Quantic Dream’s earlier titles. However, Beyond: Two Souls is a clear winner if you’re looking for more games like Heavy Rain that showcase plenty of moral decisions, an addictive storyline, and superb cinematic acting.
7. Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy
Also made by Quantic Dream, Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy is another action-adventure game cut from the same cloth as Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. The game’s storyline is infused with psychological horror, paranormal and science-fiction elements, all the while giving you control of four main characters seeking the truth behind a slew of murders. Plenty of time-sensitive moral choices and hard-to-predict outcomes await you, with the game’s grim atmosphere creating persistent feelings of dread.
Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy‘s graphics may look a bit dated (even with the HD remaster) but make no mistake: this is one of a few games like Heavy Rain that’s definitely worthy of multiple playthroughs!
8. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
To be honest, any game that belongs to the Deus Ex franchise has a place on this list, as these games have prided themselves on giving you a full spectrum of choice-and-consequence dilemmas. Nonetheless, we figured the most recent installment warranted a special mention here for being the most polished of the lot (that is, until Mankind Divided comes out!)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the perfect hybrid of RPG and FPS. Each crucial decision you make unlocks unique mission routes, character upgrades, and collectible items. All of this happens amid gorgeous level designs, interactive dialogues, and deep character developments. Like most other games like Heavy Rain, multiple playthroughs are a must if you wish to unlock the entire scope of possible moral outcomes. Inarguably, Human Revolution is a classic title that needs to be played!
