1 | S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

In 2007 PC gamers were treated with an under-the-radar gem that hits familiar notes fans of Fallout 4 will immediately appreciate. If the name is any indication, you’ll find plenty of radiation and even more mutated foes to vanquish. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a first person shooter that, as one of a few games like Fallout 4, gives players an open-world to explore at their leisure – although leisurely is hardly a word I’d use to describe it. The game is almost 10 years old, but even now it’s not a stretch to say the Fallout games learned a lot from the path S.T.A.L.K.E.R. laid out before them. Definitely a title worth checking out if you’re looking for more post-apocalyptic themed games similar to Fallout 4!

2 | Rage

While many critics would consider Rage a disappointment after it rode out a sizable (over)hype train to its 2011 release, it hits many of the same notes Fallout 4 fans will find similar. The setting, for one, evokes the same sense of desolation of a world that is little more than a shell of its former glory. The first person shooting mechanics are about as tight as they get, something Fallout 4 misses the mark on (thank God for V.A.T.S.!).

3 | Borderlands 2

You want loot? I’ll give you loot. And then some. Fallout 4 has pretty much an endless amount of junk to amass, almost to the point of ridiculousness. Borderlands 2 doesn’t quite make you a hoarder, but it does give you hundreds of guns, shields, and other goodies to hunt down in your quest across the barren wasteland. All these things make it like other post-apocalyptic games like Fallout 4 (Plus, there’s an incredible bundle collection out now for the PS4 and Xbox One). As a plus, the game also has a similar sense of humor and silliness the Fallout franchise is famous for.

4 | The Last of Us

The only thing that really ties Fallout 4 to The Last of Us is the setting and enemy set. Both are great games in their own right, but as far as mechanics, personality, and scale, they couldn’t be more different. Playing through The Last of Us is a good reminder that post-apocalyptic games can come in a variety sizes and colors. You won’t find many super mutants on Joel and Ellie’s journey, but you’ll run into plenty of clickers. And those guys are f*cking terrifying. There’s now a remastered version of The Last of Us available for consoles which has received a super high 4 1/2 Star review from almost 1600 satisfied gamers!

5 | Wasteland 2

Wasteland 2 pays homage to a day in age when Fallout games were more turn-based role playing than open world junk collection simulator. Set in a familiar post-apocalyptic setting, Wasteland 2 revives the isometric turn-based RPG genre with an entirely fresh coat of rust-colored paint. Collect loot, assemble a strong party, and make your way through the wasteland one roll of the 20-sided die at a time. This game is perfect for players looking for games like Fallout 4, albeit an old-school version of the franchise. There’s a newly revamped Director’s Cut version of Wasteland 2 out now.

6 | Metro: Last Light

The Metro universe, created by author Dmitry Glukhovsky, has produced several post-apocalyptic adventures, the most recent being Metro: Last Light in 2013. The game does have a few glaring issues, most notably being the questionable enemy AI and weak third act, but Fallout 4 fans will feel right at home with tight shooting mechanics and a believable end of the world setting. You aren’t given a sprawling sandbox to do with what you want, but the linear nature of the game paces the player with great effect, making for a different, but equally enjoyable post-apocalyptic experience. Another great title out of a bunch of games like Fallout 4! Plus, there’s an excellent bundled Redux version available for current gen consoles that contains all DLCs and revamped content in one great package.

7 | State of Decay

Zombies! I’m surprised it’s taken me all the way down to seven to mention a game featuring everybody’s favorite virus infected, brain-jonesing bad guys (clickers in The Last of Us don’t count). State of decay is an open-world zombie game for Xbox Live Arcade that immediately handcuffs players with a dire life or death situation. A grim setting and heavy RPG elements will have players looking for games similar to Fallout 4 feeling right at home. Replace ghouls with zombies and a syringe gun with a hockey stick and you’ve got yourself State of Decay.

8 | Bioshock Infinite

While not necessarily set in a post-apocalyptic setting, Bioshock Infinite does present a harrowing depiction of a dystopian future where things aren’t always as they seem. Run and gun your way through the floating air city of Columbia as Booker DeWitt as you search for a mysterious girl named Elizabeth. The story is amazing. The gameplay is fast and furious. The ending will punch you in the gut and leave you writhing in a heap on the floor. For players looking for more games like Fallout 4, you NEED to play this game now! Check out the awesome bundled collection as well for the greatest gaming value for money.

9 | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Fallout 4 has been described by many as “Skyrim with guns,” and while that hasty depiction doesn’t tell the whole story, it certainly has merit. It makes sense, too, seeing as how both games were developed by the same studio, Bethesda Games. As a game similar to Fallout 4, Skyrim offers quick character creation followed by pointing you out in the world and ripping the training wheels off. If you’ve managed to avoid Skyrim up to this point – and I applaud you if you have – now is the perfect time to jump in. Okay, I admit, it’s not a post-apocalyptic game like Fallout 4 per se, but still, I can guarantee you that your Fallout 4 withdrawal symptoms will thank you for giving Skyrim a go. The game is even better now with the Legendary Edition now out — and that doesn’t even include the countless player-made mods available for free download.
