5. I Am Legend
Will Smith is an action movie legend at this point, so it should come as no surprise at least one of his movies has made the list! I Am Legend, based on the classic horror novel by Richard Matheson, tells the story of virologist Robert Neville (Smith), the last man on earth. Neville lost everything when the virus hit, including his wife and daughter, but he somehow still finds the will to move on. He spends his days searching for supplies, other survivors, and specimens that will help him with his night gig. By night, he locks down the house and works in his lab, where he studies the virus in an effort to save humankind from the vampires who are dead-set on finishing him off.
6. Resident Evil: Extinction
Resident Evil: Extinction offers a similar setting to that of Mad Max: Fury Road. Both movies take place in the desert, creating a desolate atmosphere that adds a sense of doom to the post-apocalyptic scenarios. In this installment of the long-running Resident Evil franchise, the Umbrella Corporation is back to their nasty ways, and now the world is facing the mass extinction of humans due to the infected. Alice (Milla Jovovich), in her ongoing battle against her former employer, sets out to save the world, like she always does!
7. War of the Worlds
War of the Worlds delivers an updated version of the original story told in the novel by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is already in over his head, spending the weekend with his two kids who normally live with their mom, but when giant alien machines suddenly spring from the earth, they are in for the fight of their life. War of the Worlds is a polarizing film – people either love it or hate it, but like Mad Max: Fury Road, there are plenty of actions sequences that will keep you on the edge of your couch, rooting for the good guys.
8. 28 Days Later
28 Days Later follows a small group of survivors as they race against zombie hordes that run freakishly fast. It only takes a drop of infected blood to turn into a monster, but some humans don’t need that as they ride out the apocalypse. Heralded as one of the best zombie apocalypse movies ever made, 28 Days Later explores the depths of both evil and kindness within the human soul, and leaves you questioning the nature of humanity.
9. The Book of Eli
Like Furious and Max from Mad Max: Fury Road, Eli (Denzel Washington) is on a mission. The Book of Eli conveys his tale, as Eli pairs up with Solara (Mila Kunis) and travels across the county, protecting his book that will save civilization. They contend with biker gangs, cannibals and evil leaders who want to intercept the treasure. Religious tropes are aplenty in this flick that is reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road.
10. This is the End
This list is full of films that, while they are awesome, some might find kind of depressing. Therefore, we decided to bring in some comedic relief. This is the End features all your favorite comedians, like Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride as they try to survive when the world is invaded by… well pretty much any scary thing you could possibly imagine. Trust us when we say that this is over-the-top comedy done right!
